LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE

Experience that shapes
our mission.

CHD Housing is led and guided by experienced professionals who have spent decades supporting people with a learning disability, autism, and complex mental health needs.

Our work is informed by housing expertise and a deep, practical understanding of the care sector and the challenges professionals face in securing the right environment for people who require specialist support.

We are proud to work alongside leaders committed to improving housing pathways and creating meaningful, lasting change for people who too often fall through the gaps in traditional housing systems.

MEET JANE BYFORD

A key voice behind our mission is Jane Byford, CHD Housing’s director, who is a senior leader in the UK care sector with more than four decades of experience across supported living, specialist housing, and complex care services.

Throughout her career, Jane has worked closely with NHS commissioners, local authorities, multidisciplinary clinical teams, and housing providers to support people to live safely in their communities.

"For many people with complex needs, the biggest change doesn’t come from treatment plans or policies — it comes from having a place where they feel safe. When someone finally has a home that truly belongs to them, you start to see confidence grow, independence develop, and dignity return"

Her leadership and dedication to the sector have been widely recognised, including:

Manager of the Year
Learning Disability (2023)

British Care Awards Regional Winner 2024/2025
Outstanding Contribution to Social Care

For Jane, the importance of specialist housing stems from years of working directly with people whose lives were shaped
by their living environments.
One experience in particular continues to shape her approach to housing.

My role is to make housing work as part of a care pathway so people can leave the hospital at the right time, move into the community safety and stay there. That means working with investors and developers who understand the impact, not just demand. It also means aligning housing with brokerage commissioners and care providers before pressure hits. Being accountable for what happens after someone moves in, not just opening a door, is what really matters. Housing is not a handover point, but a promise to provide safety, dignity and respect to every person involved.
